The legend of the "fire ship" is inspired by the Portuguese expeditions of the Corte-Real brothers. In 1501, Gaspar encountered the Mi'gmaq while navigating Chaleur Bay and attempted to capture them, just as he had with the Beothuk of Newfoundland.
The operation failed, and the crew was killed. Miguel set out in search of him, but his ship was also attacked and vanished after fierce fighting, consumed by flames.
Since then, it is said that a burning ghost ship appears offshore on stormy nights.
